I looked around a bit and found it attributed to Frank Sinatra too, as well as in a list of Irish drinking toasts.

Reminds me of a personal lesson I learned a few years ago. I was driving to KY to visit family. Nightfall hit and the weather got awful. Was on a mountain interstate that was under construction...no pained lines, no emergency lanes or shoulder and raining so hard you could not see. Making it worse, tractor trailers would zoom by producing a wave of water. Was white knuckling it and fearing the worst. Then I saw a sign that said "lodging next exit." Was hoping I could make it. Finally got there and found the hotel. Nerves were shot and I just wanted a drink. No food or drink at the only hotel available. Only beer sold in that county and I cannot drink beer due to the gluten.
Important lesson...despite what you think your plans are (I never expected an overnight stop)...never travel without alcohol!!!

Seems like, in cases like that, the "castle doctrine" should apply.!!! Your vehicle, being an extension of your home, should be a "protected space." A place where amnesty reigns supreme. Oooh, I can think of several things to do in a vehicle, ..... other than just 'ride'.
