PANTHERS SIGN FORMER 1st ROUND RUNNING BACK RASHAAD PENNY - PantherFan007 - 05-06-2024

Panthers agree to terms with Rashaad Penny

Panthers agree to terms with Rashaad Penny

CHARLOTTE—The Panthers made a significant addition to the backfield during the NFL draft and added some depth there Monday.

The Panthers have agreed to terms with running back Rashaad Penny.

Penny, 28, is a former first-round pick of the Seahawks in 2018 (when Panthers head coach Dave Canales was an assistant there).

The 5-foot-11, 220-pounder spent last year with the Eagles, appearing in three games.

He ran for 749 yards and six touchdowns in 2021 and has 1,951 yards and 13 touchdowns in 45 career games. He's dealt with injury issues in the past, including a torn ACL, but has a 5.6 yards per carry average when he's played.

The Panthers added to the running backs room by drafting Jonathon Brooks in the second round, adding him to Chuba Hubbard, Miles Sanders, and Raheem Blackshear. The Panthers also have Tarik Cohen, Spencer Brown and Mike Boone on the roster.

Going to be crowded in that room  Lots of competition!

After doing a little more research on him, my only worry is the same concern I have about Jonathan Brooks. Rashaad never seemed to "get back" to his previous abilities after his ACL surgery.

Have to wonder about these choices... especially the injury history.

This guy (Penny) has played in less than 50% of his games over six years. 45 games out of almost 100.  Less than 2000 yards over six years. Thats  about 330 yards per year....

This is another example of "1st round talent" that has turned out to be a "miss".  Of course, there are the injuries.. But injuries are part of the game. Lots of injuries though...

I’m more optimistic, this could be…possibly will be…confident it should be… the final piece of the puzzle.

I really do think we could have a major recovery year… we just have to play Dalton.

I'm not against that, either.  It would definitely give Bryce Young some time to sit and watch before throwing him back to the wolves.

I don't disagree. In fact, I AGREE..... But I sincerely believe that Bryce is going to play.  The Panthers simply have too much invested to let him sit around. And with all of the talk about him, it would be a terribly bad 'look' for the Panthers to sit him out unless he was injured. I think they have to play him for the look, if nothing else.  That means it could be another long season for our offense and a lot of 'bad-mouthing' everyone on the offense when Bryce doesn't perform.  Bryce SHOULD be better this year, but we could waste a lot of time (and games..) deciding.

I sure hope things improve dramatically...

I hear ya first.  Sarcastic n whatnot.  If Bryce can’t play in this o, oops.  Maybe 1 more year, but this year is VERY important.  I agree Daulton could get us 8-9 max.  What’s the point in that?  Not much IMHO.

Bryce has to be better. Law of averages. Unless he’s a Clausen(looking at u Kiper).

I'm not sure exactly what you're saying here, Josh.  But you asked the question....

So... What's the point??  Well, I'm 'on the record' here several times saying what i thought would be a successful season. Every time I've said the same thing. "A winning record". The panthers have six consecutive losing seasons. We haven't had a winning record since 2017. So, a nine win season this year after a league 'worst' last year seems like a GIGANTIC step in the right direction (AFAIC). We all know a Panthers turnaround is not going to happen in one year - ??? (Right..???).

I’ll be honest, I don’t mind winning/losing so much as HOW we lost. We had the worst watchable offense I’ve ever seen.  It was like there was no heart, no dedication and no identity.  There was no will to push, no attempt to get the extra, and guys weren’t playing for each other.  That was the most demoralizing season I’ve ever seen, so I get First’s attitude towards it,
