New England Patriots place quarterback on exempt list after unexpected absence (msn.com)

The New England Patriots have placed Matt Corral on the exempt list after the quarterback was not seen at Gillette Stadium the past two days for practice, walkthrough, or meetings, according to reports.

Corral, 24, looked set to be the Patriots' backup for the 2023 NFL season after arriving on waivers. The Carolina Panthers third-round pick in 2022, he was picked up by New England at the end of August after Bailey Zappe and Malik Cunningham were cut, leaving just Mac Jones in the quarterback department.

The Ole Miss star had a tough rookie season with the Panthers, sustaining a Lisfranc injury to his foot in a preseason game against the Patriots, resulting in him being placed on season-ending injured reserve. However, his future has now been thrown into doubt just two weeks later after being placed on the exempt list ahead of Sunday's opener against Super Bowl finalist Philadelphia Eagles. New England made the move after Corral left without notice.

Zappe then cleared waivers and was re-signed by the Patriots from the practice squad before being elevated to the 53-man roster the same day Corral left, according to NFL Network. Zappe's return essentially leaves New England where they were before Bill Belichick decided to make a late August shakeup.
