Panthers trade Dionte Johnson for nothing

Literally?  A pick swap…. ?  Dionte and a 6th for Ravens 5th…This is so stupid.  We could have kept him and we would have gotten a 3rd compensatory pick.  Wtf?  Our front offense is retarded.

It’s hard to claim to be a fan anymore. I hate being a Debbie downer, but geez… I seriously don’t care much about this team anymore

When the Panthers traded for Johnson during the offseason, they knew full well about his reputation for being a locker-room diva who wasn’t afraid to throw his quarterbacks under the bus. But they hoped he’d be on his best behavior while playing for a new contract.

And while some in the organization didn’t have an issue with Johnson, he didn’t hide his displeasure during Bryce Young’s slow start and had stopped practicing the past couple of weeks due to various injuries. When Johnson ran a bad route at Washington in Week 7 that resulted in an Andy Dalton interception, Dalton slammed his helmet and yelled when he got to the sideline.

It feels now like that was the beginning of the end for Johnson in Carolina, which agreed to pay down Johnson’s salary down to the minimum and tossed a Baltimore a pick in order to be done with Johnson.

No doubt Dan got the best deal he could get. Johnson did not help any with his behavior,  Was becoming a cancer and needed to go.  Give the young guys reps and send a message.  Not going to fret over this one

I can respect that even if I disagree. Way way to many contenders needing wr help. And if the above is so and I believe it, it shows that Dan used “hope” as a guidance and hope is no strategy. Either come in or going out…I believe both… Dan did a poor job. I have not seen any moves that he has won but several he has lost. And I loved Dan as a player but I care about today and his gm ability and not the past and his playing ability. Sorry for the rant but this will never be good enough.

My problem is why do it a week out from trade deadline ?   Another team , wanting to be a playoff, contender, could have a wide receiver get injuried and been willing to trade for a little more.  There was no need to trade with Baltimore so they could have one more week with Deonte and in all honesty, to get nothing in return.    
I know this is a stretch , but should the Ravens win the Super Bowl,  we'd move up one pick for this trade.  More likely we'll move up 7-15 places.  But an injury to another wide receiver on another contending team might have garnered us more. 

I heard, ( speculation by announcer WFNZ ) ,,  not sure if it's true,,  we might be paying part of his salary to boot.  Not good.

For what it's worth, there was a story that I read overnight where teams have been calling Dan Morgan trying to trade for Jaycee Horn and Jadaveon Clowney, but they were told those two players were not being included in any trade talks.

That said, we know how "things" work sometimes. No today, Yay tomorrow.

PANTHERS RIP BAND-AID OFF WITH SECOND DIONTAE JOHNSON TRADE 

The Panthers clearly weren’t going to re-sign Johnson. So, the next logical step for them was to get value for him before he shipped off in free agency. According to a source with knowledge of the trade negotiations, the Panthers initially spoke with two teams about Johnson a little over a week before the agreement with Baltimore was made on Tuesday. Per the same source, the Ravens entered the mix later as the third interested party. The issue for the Panthers was that the Pittsburgh Steelers essentially told the league that he was worth the equivalent of a high sixth-round pick in March when they traded him to Carolina. The Panthers sent a sixth-round pick and soon-to-be-cut cornerback Donte Jackson to Pittsburgh in exchange for Johnson and a seventh-round pick. The market — which is regularly studied by general managers and execs around the league — didn’t change much in the next seven-plus months. While Johnson had been the Panthers’ No. 1 wideout all offseason and into training camp and the regular season, his 30 catches for 357 yards and three touchdowns weren’t enough to entice a team to trade major assets for him. In Baltimore, he will be no better than the third wideout behind Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman, most likely. Last week, a different league source told The Observer that the Panthers’ initial asking price for Johnson was a third-round pick. Clearly, there wasn’t enough interest to warrant a player-for-pick swap, let alone a Day 2 pick for Johnson. With all that said, the Panthers got seven games of Johnson’s production, a 2024 seventh-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick for the price of two sixth-round picks and Jackson, who was essentially a throw-in asset in the initial trade. It feels like a wash at best. A swindling at worst. But probably just a shoulder shrug in reality. Johnson, despite stating he wanted to stay in Carolina, clearly didn’t have a future with the Panthers, based on the front office’s actions. The Panthers got to prolong his value by jumping a round in the draft (probably 10-15 picks of a leap), but overall, this feels like a rough example of the cost of doing business when you’re a bad team. It’s also an example of why fire sales don’t really work in a league that values youth. If there’s a positive to all of this, undrafted rookie Jalen Coker won’t see his playing time drop off. If anything, he will to develop even further with more playing time.

A week off… I still feel this trade was stupid.

We move maybe 10 spots, and give away a player and a compensatory pick. Which would have been a 3rd pick. I get Dionte was being a cancer, but shoot, keep him inactive on the non football illness list.

Basically we traded a 3rd, a 6th and Dionte Johnson for a late 5th. That’s how you have to look at it. Dan Morgan doesn’t look smart for this. Looks like he’s getting taken advantage of, and doesn’t have a clue as a new GM. Not the statement I’d like to see, nor the most confidence in the decisions being made.
