The Panthers informed veteran linebacker Shaq Thompson recently that he could enter free agency and that they were moving in another direction.

The 30-year-old Thompson, a team captain and trusted mentor, has been with the team since 2015 but has played just six games in the last two seasons because of injuries.

Their first-round pick in 2015, he played in a Super Bowl as a rookie alongside legends Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis.

His 752 tackles are fourth in franchise history, trailing only Davis, Kuechly, and Mike Minter.

"We appreciate Shaq's leadership and dedication over the past 10 seasons," said president of football operations/general manager Dan Morgan. "Always a source of passion and enthusiasm, he was committed to this organization on and off the field, poured into his teammates, and strived to bring out the best in them. We wish Shaq the best as he moves forward with his career."

Just could not stay on the field. The last few years he was a guy who wanted to be here. Retirement may not be far off given his injury history. Best wishes to him.

I agree with this move by the Panthers… and of course I wish Shaq the best. However, it’s time for a younger, healthier upgrade at the position. Hopefully it works well for both parties.

Yeah. I think Shaq realized that it was coming. He left a lot on the table last year just to stay here. Sorry to see him go, but it was probably time. We've had a LOT of excellent ILBs. Sure hope we can find another one.

All of out great LBs have come from the 1st round of the draft-Morgan, Beason, Davis, Luke, and Shaq. (Not sure Shaq fits in with "great."  But he did become very good).  All were also leaders.  Is Jalyon Walker the next one?

I just heard about this. I hate it, but I can't say it surprises me. He has been injured a lot, and he's no Thomas Davis, to be completely honest. Best wishes, Shaq!

I fully expected it. I’ve been saying we need to part ways with him since his injury. No knock to him, it’s just not an investment anymore. I hate to see him go, but wish him the best. Hopefully we can get a stud in the draft.
