Jeff Sperbeck, the longtime business partner, former agent and friend of Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, died Wednesday at 62 as a result of injuries he sustained four days earlier in a “golf cart incident,” according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office.

According to reports, Sperbeck fell off the back of a golf cart.

The incident occurred Saturday night at a private golf community in La Quinta, Calif., according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office in California.

“After an initial investigation, it was determined that medical personnel responded and transported Sperbeck to a local hospital in critical condition. On April 30, Sperbeck was pronounced deceased as a result of his injuries,” the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office is committed to conducting a thorough investigation into the death of Sperbeck and will take appropriate action based on the outcome.”

Paramedics took Sperbeck to the Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, which is where he was pronounced dead early Wednesday morning.

Sperbeck began managing Elway’s business interests during Elway’s playing career with the Denver Broncos in the 1990s. The two opened 7Cellars Winery together in 2013.

“I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the passing of my close friend, business partner and agent Jeff Sperbeck,” Elway said in a statement Wednesday. “There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me. My heart and deepest sympathies go out to Jeff’s wife, Cori; his children Carly, Sam and Jackson; and everyone who knew and loved him. Jeff will be deeply missed for the loyalty, wisdom, friendship and love he brought into my life and the lives of so many others.”

What they left out was that Elway was driving the golf cart.  Tragic.

So... SERIOUS QUESTION...

How does someone fall off of the "back" of a golf cart and ultimately die..???  Golf carts are less than one foot off of the ground. An old man on crutches could survive a fall like that. Sure, maybe land wrong and sprain a wrist or maybe twist an ankle....UNLESS this guy was standing on the roof. Or, he fell and rolled into a gully and hit his head.

Very strange, indeed.  There must be a lot more to this story.

Unfortunate for Sperbeck, of course. And for Elway as well. I've always thought John Elway was a decent guy. I know nothing about Sperbeck, but I'm sure his family is grieving. Condolences to everyone involved. Sad incidents like this continue to take place. No way to stop them, I guess.

Yes...Sad. Incredibly unfortunate. Heartfelt support for the family and Elway.....

Would like to know how he fell from the 'back' of a golf cart though.  There's no place back there for a passenger --- Is there.??  (Well, at least none I've ever seen..)  I guess it doesn't really matter. Unless there is potential litigation involved..??  Could Elway be in trouble over this.??
