The latest news on the 53 roster.

Today, WR & Return Specialist Andre Roberts was placed on IR.  No information whether he is "designated" or not. If he does come back, it could be a while.  Roberts went down with a knee injury against the Browns.

No word yet on who will take his place on the roster.  Rhule indicated that Shi Smith would probably take over Return duties. Chuba Hubbard is also available to handle some returns.

After placing Return man Andre Roberts and DT Bravvion Roy on IR, the Panthers had two open spaces on the 53 roster. They decided to move LB Arron Mosby from the Practice Squad to the 53 to fill one of the spots. Mosby was a UDFA from Fresno State. The Panthers have positioned Mosby the past two weeks on the active game-day roster as what is called a "standard elevation". This allows a team to utilize a Practice Squad player on the active squad without signing him to a 53 contract. This also allows the player to revert to the Practice Squad after the game without going through the waiver processs. A player can be "elevated" three times in a season but only reverted back twice. That means if a player is elevated a third time they would then have to sign a 53 contract or go through the waiver process before being signed back to the Practice Squad.

In addition, the Panthers have signed DT Frank Herron back to the Practice Squad.

The Panthers current roster stands at 52. So, room for one more.......

It’s at 53, they signed a RB from the bills practice squad, who had over 100yards rushing and 2 td in the preseason.  Can’t remember his name

YES.... Was just going to link to that bit of news.... You beat me to it...

As BCF just mentioned.... The Panthers have now been linked to another RB. The latest information indicates that the Panthers have signed (OR are going to sign..) a RB off of the Bills Practice Squad. The guy in question is RB Raheem Blackshear. Blackshear signed as a UDFA with the Bills and played quite a bit in the pre-season. This guy is pretty small for a NFL RB. He is something like 5'9" -- 190 lbs.  Don't know anything about his measurables.

The general consensus is that he may replace Chuba Hubbard for Return duties.  We will undoubtedly know more when the Panthers make an official announcement.  IF (or when..) this happens, Blackshear will fill out the 53 roster.

No additional update that I know of.... Can"t be signed to the Practice Squad.  (Illegal--Unlawful--Against the Rules)

As far as the signing goes...... The rules apply here to this signing.  Any time any player is "poached" 'signed' from another teams practice squad, that player MUST spend at least 3 weeks on the active 53 of his new team. He will count toward the roster total (53) and will be paid at least three weeks of salary as an active 53 roster member  (Usually the league minimum..).  He doesn't have to be available on game day where only 46 players suit up for the game.....just "active" on the 53 roster for a minimum of three weeks.  NOTE:  He CAN be released before three weeks are up, but he will still count toward the total number allowed on the roster--53, AND he will still get paid for at least three weeks even if he is released.

This "rule" is part of the NFL -- NFLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).  I think it was started as a protection for PS players being 'jumped' between teams with no intent to play them.  OR..as a tool for one team to "hurt' another team.  Now, any team "poaching" another team's player MUST pay them---and hold open a spot on the active roster.  This keeps the teams "honest" shall we say, when they know they have to dedicate an active roster spot and pay the player both ---  for at least three weeks.
