OKAY.... So Josh asked a question for which I had no answer. So I took a few minutes and did a little research.....
"Whirling Dervish" What is it.?? Where did the term come from.?? etc., etc.
My initial response of a "dance" from the Mediterranean area was sort of right, but missed the mark for a couple of reasons. Whirling Dervishes are essentially part of a mystic ritual from the Islamic religion. The Dervishes belong to the "mystic" side of Islam known as Sufi. Sufi Muslims can belong to different orders of Islam. Originally conceived as a form of "active" meditation, it started sometime in the 13th century in what was known as Persia. Today, the general area is known as Turkey.
