NEW VOCABULARY WORDS

I’m a bit of a word “geek” although you will seldom hear me admit or talk about it. And I never go out of my way to troll around just looking for words. However, whenever I see a new or interesting word (well, interesting to ME anyway), I make a mental note….

So, here’s my newest ‘word of the day’

semiotician — a person who studies or has expertise in signs and symbols

Never could have imagined….

Nice word.

Today's "word of the day".  I discovered by accident when looking to purchase some Masa Harina to make some corn flat breads -- sort of like a tortilla only not so thin or fancy (at least MINE aren't fancy.!!).


nixtamalize -- the process used on corn to prepare it for grinding into Masa Harina.  Also used to prepare corn for making hominy.

And all this time I thought Masa Harina was just a type of corn flour or finely pulverized corn used by the Latino population to make tamales and tortillas. ---WRONG.  It's special stuff.  It's been nixtamalized.!!  Who knew.???

New "Word of the Day" ... I stumbled on this one in a historical novel. Had to stop and look it up.

perspicacity -- The trait of exhibiting an overtly shrewd nature or discerning mind. A person described as perspicacious could be said to be shrewdly  or keenly intelligent.

YES.!!  All of those "fox" idioms would apply. "Quick as.."; Sly as.."; Clever as.."; etc., etc.

NEW  "Word of The Day"

While reading a novel about a game warden out west fighting crime and forest fires at the same time, I ran across this word which I had to look up. I "expected" it to be something like this, just based on the context of the reading, but I wasn't sure. So now I know...

serotinous -- remaining closed on the tree with seed dissemination delayed or occurring gradually (pine cones in fire) (Jack Pine or Lodgepole Pine are good examples). 

I realized that certain conifers cones had to be exposed to fire before re-seeding occurred. Just never imagined it would have it's own word....

Today's 'Word Of The Day'....

I stumbled on this one in a comic strip, my favorite comic strip (online).... (I KNOW.!!  Can you believe it..??). I read a lot. And I read a lot of different stuff.  This word surprised me because of "where" I found it.

Once again, as much as I read, and as old as I am, I have never seen this word before, or at least I don't remember it..

quotidian -- something occurring daily; an ordinary or every day occurrence especially when mundane..

In my email inbox this morning was a word of the day email.  Not sure where that came from.  Here is todays's word:



Deontology

.....the study of the nature of duty and obligation.


Deontology determines a moral framework for right and wrong — basically, rules for how to live your life. The names of philosophies usually have a root that can be converted into other parts of speech. “Deont-” is Greek for “being needed or necessary,” and the noun “deontology” is the name for an ethical rule-following philosophy. Another noun, “deontologist,” refers to one who practices or studies that philosophy. And “deontological,” an adjective, describes anything that follows the principles of deontology.

Heavy stuff to start the day.

Duty and obligation.  Hmm... C'est Bon. We need more awareness surrounding "duty and obligation".!!
