Very quickly here, before we get to the 'nuts 'n bolts', let me say..... I know that this is a VERY early look at a roster which has not been set. In fact, there are probably many changes yet to happen among the hopeful 90 who make up the current 'training camp' roster. And yet, as we all know, there are quite a few players and positions already decided and "locked down". So, forgetting about bottom of the roster changes, AND the potential for injuries which we know will happen (sadly..), I went to the laundry basket, found my "other pants", and retrieved my 'Crystal Ball', which admittedly needs some polishing (I'm working on that -- the polishing that is...).

So, here is my first 2023 projected 53 roster for the Panthers. Roster is by 'Position Group' with no attempt to rank the players within each group.

Easy things first...

SPECIAL TEAMS:

LS -- JJ Jansen
P -- Johnny Hecker
K -- Eddie Pineiro

OFFENSE:

QBs

Bryce Young
Andy Dalton
Matt Corral

RBs

Miles Sanders
Chuba Hubbard
Raheem Blackshear
(FB) Giovanni Ricci -- Ricci is listed as a TE, but he plays almost exclusively as a blocker/short yardage/red zone/ goal line, Power Back. So we'll leave him here for now.  ***Attrition cut, can't make everyone happy...

WRs

Adam Thielen
DJ Chark
Jonathon Mingo
Terrace Marshall Jr
Laviska Chenault Jr
Shi Smith  ***Attrition cut, can't make everyone happy...
Damiere Byrd
CJ Saunders
Derek Wright  ***Attrition cut, can't make everyone happy...

TEs

Hayden Hurst
Ian Thomas
Tommy Tremble
Stephen Sullivan  ***Attrition cut, can't make everyone happy...

OL

Ikem Ekwonu
Brady Christensen
Bradley Bozeman
Austin Corbett --- Will start the season on PUP, So not on the first 53 roster. Will have to 'bump' someone when he comes back.
Taylor Moton
Cade Mays
Chandler Zavala
Cameron Erving
Sam Tecklenburg
Justin McCray
Larnell Coleman
Deonte Brown   ***Attrition cut, can't make everyone happy...
Michael Jordan  ***Attrition cut, can't make everyone happy...

*** Hmm... A quick count right here shows 32 Offensive players.  Huh  That ain't gonna work. Gonna hafta make some changes. Too many O-Line guys and WRs

I'm thinking 10 O-linemen (maybe only 9..??). Max of 7 WRs. 3 QBs. 3 RBs. 3 TEs.  That would make 26 Offensive players, 3 ST guys, and ONLY 24 slots left for the DEFENSE..??
Huh

DEFENSE is coming up RSN   Joker

Had to run an errand..... so now to finish up this mess.

DEFENSE:

DL

Derrick Brown
Shy Tuttle
Henry Anderson
Bravion Roy
Marquan McCall
John Penisini
DeDhawn Williams  ***Attrition cut -- Can't keep everyone happy

LBs

Brian Burns
Shaq Thompson
Frankie Luvu
Yetur Gross-Matos
Brandon Smith
Amare Barno
Marquise Haynes
Kamu Grugier-Hill  ***Attrition cut - Can't keep everyone happy
Arron Mosby  ***Attrition cut - Can't keep everyone happy
DJ Johnson
Bumper Pool

DBs

Jaycee Horn
Donte Jackson
CJ Henderson
Keith Taylor Jr
Jeremy Chinn --- No way to know WHERE he plays...But he WILL play
Stantley Thomas Oliver III
Vonn Bell
Xavier Woods
Jammie Robinson
Greg Mabin ***Attrition cut - Can'y keep everyone happy
Herb Miller  CHANGE -- Cut - I think I made a mistake with Miller
Eric Rowe  Takes Miller's slot. Panthers have guaranteed a big chunk of his salary, Sooo.....

OK... My initial list has 28 players. That's four too many if the numbers on the Offensive side are correct.  So, I have to cut four to make the roster limit.

Goodness.... That's not easy. We have a lot of young players that MIGHT show up. And there will undoubtedly be some injuries.  So, I expect my roster will change before cut-down day.

Hey First...

Your "numbers" and mine are almost identical (almost...). A couple of questions for you. You have the RBs at 4 1/2..?? I can understand Ricci as half and half, but who would be the 4th RB.??  Wouldn't it make more sense to stay at 3 1/2 and use the extra spot as a WR instead of decreasing the Defense another spot.?? We both have the numbers at 26 Offense, and 24 Defense. If you make the change you mentioned, it would be 27 Offense and 23 Defense.  Getting a little too unbalanced I think -- IMO.

Anyway...since this is about the 53 Roster, and NOT a "depth chart", how about coming up with the player 'names' to go along with the numbers.??? I know it's crazy, but get your crystal ball out and tell us who you think the players will be at the position groups. The three ST specialists are a given. Who are the other fifty..?? Don't just stick your toes in and dabble.!! Jump into the deep water. Give us the names..!!

Hiss -- boo....You guys are no fun.

SMH -- You know who we had last year, and who we lost, who we gained. and who we drafted. Come on. Take a SWAG at it. SWAG = Scientific Wild Ass Guess.  Most of the first-team guys should be pretty easy. The Offense looks pretty easy except for a few reserve guys along the line. The QBs are set. The ST specialists are set. The Defense looks like the hardest picks....

Put on your big-boy pants, stand up and be counted. Pick the beginning 53 roster.  NAMES, we want NAMES.!!

By my math I get to add two… I’ll leave it to my choices. Ol n db choices.. dl, lb also. Numbers may vary, but I didn’t go over roster limits, just listed expected fights for the roster. Honestly don’t know.

Next!

I have Shaq listed but wouldn’t be surprised it cut. Jackson I don’t have making the 53 but think he will be in the practice squad and always destined to be there, when one doesn’t have numbers at the lower level it’s hard for to to imagine that changing here. I also don’t think peoples even make the practice squad. I probably have a few surprises in Redmond and Leota but they fit the system well, of course all in my opinion. Of course there will always be injuries and other pickups from cut. This is just todays 53
