CHARLOTTE — He's back.

The Panthers on Thursday agreed to terms with quarterback Cam Newton, bringing the former No. 1 overall pick back to Charlotte, pending a physical.

The 32-year-old Newton adds experience to the position, and offers possibilities on offense which can only help.

With starter Sam Darnold out four to six weeks with a shoulder injury, the Panthers' only other quarterbacks on the active roster were P.J. Walker and recently acquired Matt Barkley.

But it's not just Newton's 139 NFL starts that make him valuable, it's the possibilities to help a defense that is near the top of the league, for a team that still has legitimate playoff hopes.

In Newton's nine seasons with the Panthers, he threw for 29,041 yards and 182 touchdowns, and ran for 58 touchdowns. He's the team's all-time leader in all three categories, and he's also third on the team's all-time rushing list with 4,806 yards, trailing only Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams.

Newton won the NFL offensive rookie of the year award in 2011, and league MVP honors in 2015, when he led the team to a 15-1 record and a berth in the Super Bowl.

He's also the NFL's all-time leader in rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with 70, 12 of which came last year in 15 starts with the Patriots.

Depressed Depressed  Oh well......  He will hang around for the rest of the year.  10 MIL for half a season..... And no reason to believe he will be any more effective here now than he was at the Patriots.....  Couldn't beat out a ROOK this year.....

Everyone talking about Cam's GREAT arm. Jumping up and down in ecstasy. This, the same guy who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.... from the INSIDE with the DOORS CLOSED.!!!  (Well....MAYBE the roof..) -----  Cry Cry **SIGH**  How soon we forget.

As the saying goes:  "Too soon old; Too late smart"

I hear ya, but part of the reason the Patriots cut him (which has been uber-discussed by the talking heads today) is that he refused to get vaccinated.  But, since then he has gotten vaccinated, which was part of the terms of him signing with the Panthers.

Oh, and I hate to say it, but Cam at his worst was better than most of what we have seen from Darnold at his best.

He will help our running game, especially in the rz/short yardage. No one better. Period. Can he throw 65% completions like last year? If so, yeah! Our weapons n st, d are way better than in 18/19 or the pats last year. PJ this week, unless he’s pulled. Can cam spark the o? Can’t get much worse! Go PJ n Cam. Could care less who starts (except PJ this week should), but I wanna see wins. Still hope PJ balls out!

I had to go back last night and watch old highlights of Cam from when he was here, and boy were they exciting. Just watching them again gave me hope, however brief that might be, that there .... is..... still..... HOPE.
