RE: Thinking about the draft? - Firstchance - 04-25-2024 Though not as big of a bust like Bryce, JJ McCarthy will be breaking hearts for whomever drafts him. You heard it hear first (like Bryce). RE: Thinking about the draft? - Josh21 - 04-26-2024 I thought this the best thread to post this. We traded again! Morgan is at least earning his paycheck. He’s active. He’s active. Yes he is! RE: Thinking about the draft? - Hobbit99 - 04-27-2024 i still don't have all the 'wrinkles' ironed out from yesterday. Or, maybe i should say, I don't know WTH happened yesterday (I mean "exactly" -- you know..). My thoughts after trying to understand it all.. (and many mucho 'THANK YOUs' to LP and Josh and BCF for contributing to my 'clarity'), is as follows. We traded back from #39 to #52 (??) and gained a 2nd rounder for next year along with #155. So we gave up 12 draft positions and picked up a 5th rounder AND a 2nd next year. Good Trade.!! We will need that pick next year. BUT... then we traded back UP again to #46 and gave them back (except for 2nd next year), plus we threw in #142. So we gave back #52, #155, and #142 to move UP 6 spots..??? This one is STRANGE. Now understand, I like the pick at #46. Brooks is a dynamic RB. I am glad we have him. But a high 2nd Rd.?? Surely, he would have been there at #52 (???). So the #1 RB in the draft comes home to Carolina with a surgically repaired knee (ACL) that happened just six months ago. A RB with a surgical knee.?? --Hmmm -- Sure glad we have Chuba Hubbard under contract. So then --- what happened.?? At this point we've traded out of #33, #39, #141, and #142. We should still have #65, #101, #200 and #240. I know we drafted LB Trevin Wallace at #72 (I'm not all-in on Wallace - have to wait and see..) ...... So what happened to #65.?? Since #72 belonged to the Jets, and LPs crib sheet shows us getting it from them, did we trade #65 to NYJ.?? I guess we did.?? Because LPs sheet shows us with #157 as well. SO... we traded #65 to the Jets for #72 and #157. Right.??? Was there any other 'weirdness' that went on while I was buying my puppy something to eat and some veggies and "stuff" for me.?? So that means we are left with #101 and #157 to make a little more headway today. I know we have #200 and #240 also....but "hit rate" on picks that late is so low as to be almost meaningless. We can always hope, but 7th rounders are basically "throw-aways" and #200 is not much better. (AFAIC). OKAY.... So far we have: Legette at #32 Brooks at #46 Wallace at #72 2nd rounder in 2025 I'm liking it so far, with some reservations. #101 and #157 could make or break this draft. If I've missed anything or got anything 'balled up' please let me know.!! RE: Thinking about the draft? - OceanPanther - 04-27-2024 I know can't see the big picture.... but being active and making un seen gains , is baffeling to me. Truly hoping I , we, laugh at my ignorance because of how all this works out... RE: Thinking about the draft? - Ladypanther - 04-27-2024 Just go with the flow Hobs. Next year do your grocery shopping earlier...lol. For the 1st time ever, we may have a gm who can find good players late. In Buffalo he impressed with his eye for talent so I am hopeful. RE: Thinking about the draft? - Firstchance - 04-27-2024 Did they just say that roster were made up to the tune of 63% with draftees in rounds 4-7 and undrafted free agents. Don’t say those picks are not important. RE: Thinking about the draft? - BlackCatzFan - 04-27-2024 Just grabbed Texas TE sanders, a solid pickup. Can still use a pick for CB though RE: Thinking about the draft? - Hobbit99 - 04-27-2024 (04-27-2024, 11:02 AM)Firstchance Wrote: Did they just say that roster were made up to the tune of 63% with draftees in rounds 4-7 and undrafted free agents. Huh..??? Who is "they"?? Who said that.?? But to answer your question.... With 7 rounds of picks and 32 picks in each round..... Then YES, there are more "picks" coming out of 4-7 than there are coming out of 1-3. Simple math. Add in UDFAs and Compensatory picks, and YES, there are more players every year coming out of 4-7 and UDFAs. That doesn't mean that those players have a role or are being counted on to produce. Nor does it mean that they will even hang around for next year, much less for a career. They're just extra bodies. And many (most.??) of them hang around for two or three years on a rookie contract then fade away into oblivion. Of course, teams DO pick clear to the last spot. They HOPE that once in a great while they "hit" on a 7th or UDFA. But they are not counting on any player drafted that far down to be a contributor. No GM in his right mind, would equate a 7th rounder or UDFA to a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th round pick. No GM (in his right mind) would trade one 2nd rounder for three or four UDFAs. So sure, teams pick down to the last man and add UDFAs. Why not.?? Maybe they'll strike gold. Like Mr. Irrelevant. It CAN happen. And it doesn't cost anything to take a swing. You never know. But FIRST... you know as well as I do, how the trade value chart is designed. There's a reason you have to trade a BUNCH of late rounders for ONE 2nd rounder. There is just little to no value in the late round picks. So, as far as "they" saying that there are 63% of a roster of draftees come out of rounds 4-7. OF COURSE THAT's TRUE, just based on numbers. But it most certainly is NOT true based on value. 7th rounders and UDFAs are essentially practice fodder and are replaced the following year with more of the same. And yet we continue to HOPE.... maybe this is the year we find a "gem" hidden in a most unlikely place. I stand behind what I said 100%. |
