CHARLOTTE — The Panthers added another young pass-rusher to the defense Monday.

According to multiple reports, including from NFL Network, the Panthers agreed to terms with Vikings defensive end Patrick Jones II.

No deals can be official until the league year begins Wednesday at 4 p.m.

The 26-year-old Jones had 7.0 sacks last year for the Vikings last season, along with nine tackles for loss and a forced fumble.

The 6-foot-4, 264-pound Jones was a third-round pick out of Pittsburgh and will join former Vikings teammate D.J. Wonnum here.

With the exception of way overpaying Jaycee, the Panthers have had a good day (if they stick until Wednesday)… did I mention we overpaid Jaycee.

I don’t know if you mentioned it, BUT I DID!!

YES, we definitely overpaid Jaycee. I have a bad feeling about his injury status going forward. I hope I’m wrong, but we could easily have 50-70M in Dead Cap hanging out in the wind on that deal. I LIKE Jaycee. I really do. He’s GOOD. He’s OUR #1 CB. But he’s not $70M (guaranteed) good.!!  SMH— This feels like an accident waiting to happen.!!!!

I agree Hobbit, when I read the details I immediately told myself it was really a 3 year 70
million dollar deal.  It’s a little Better but a tough pill To swallow. Makes more sende and if
He stays heathy might be worth it. A focal
Step up guy in HIS backfield were he will need to be the leader back there.

A little concern here but overall a good reasonsable and I fee highly productive way. Great day one.

JC needs to stay on the field and cut down on the penalties.

Somehow i hope he can accomplish both.  We need him to be great.  I hope he makes that contract look like a steal.

(yea...I am a confessed optimist.)

Agree with your points, LP.  And there is nothing wrong with being optimistic. I am that way usually (well, OK, sometimes..??).  However I more frequently trend toward being a realist.

**Sigh** It's a tough standard to bear, but I feel called to carry the torch for objectivism and measurable outcomes.

Anybody wanna comment on the actual pickup?  I like it.  Rotation piece.

So... Josh is right. The question here is about Patrick Jones II. We've picked him up, ostensibly to be an EDGE guy (I assume..). Which is perfect for two reasons. First, he is 6'4", 264... Which, to my way of thinking, is just about perfect for an OLB. Second, he played as an OLB for the Vikings, so it seems like a natural fit. Jones is 26 Y.O. as near as I can figure. He was drafted in the 3rd round at #90 in 2021 by Minnesota. So..... that means he is just now coming off of his rookie contract (4 years, no 5th yr option..).

That brings me to my first question... If this guy was any good, why are the Vikings giving up on him.? 26 Y.O. and no contract after being drafted in the 3rd round.??? Hmmmm...

Anyway, Jones' prospect grade coming into the Draft was a 5.9.  That translates to an "Average Backup or Special-Teamer". His forecast draft slot was somewhere in the 5th round. So, being taken in the 3rd says something, although I'm not sure what.?? The general consensus at the time was that Jones lacked "drive". His "motor" was suspect. "Technique" needed work. He didn't play with a "commanding presence" and had a "lack of consistent urgency". Yet, the Vikings took him in the 3rd. They probably figured on capitalizing on his near-perfect size as an EDGE guy to outweigh some of the negatives. His Combine results were less than superlative. His "Production Score" was 13th among EDGE guys. His "Athleticism" score was 28th among EDGE prospects. His "Total" score was 20th among Edge guys.

So... How has it worked out.??  Well, his rookie year, 2021, was pretty much a waste. He  played in 9 games and had 7 total tackles. Nothing else of any sort on the stat line. 2022, was better. he played in 16 games and had 27 total tackles, 4 Sacks, and 3 1/2 "Stuffs". (Which is essentially a stop at point of contact behind the LOS." Like a TFL...). In 2023, he played in 17 games wit 32 total tackles. he had 1 Sack and 4 "Stuffs". Last year, 2024, he played in 15 games with 39 total tackles. He had 7 Sacks, 1 Forced Fumble, and 3 "Stuffs".

It looks like he has been slowly improving. However, 12 sacks in 4 years is nothing to write home about. OTOH, his size IS GOOD for the position. If he has any speed (unknown), and his technique has improved, and he accepts coaching, then he could be a useful addition to the rotation. he just seems to be "late coming to the party.".

NOTE:  Jones' 40 time at the Combine was 4.83 and it was 4.94 at his Pro Day. Not terrible but definitely NOT fast.

Thanks for the deep dive. At the very least he should help set the edge.
