PANTHERS TRADE UP FOR DE NIC SCOURTON - TEXAS A&M - PantherFan007 - 04-25-2025

Don't know much about him personally.

Doesn't sound like a pass rusher, more of a run stuffer.

One scout said “he could be more of a pass rusher but he put on too much weight last season”

Sweet, we got Kelvin Benjamin on the D Line.

In all fairness, he isn't overweight by any standard, and really is still kind of small for a DE, more like an OLB (3-4 Defense) which we need.  He's 6'3 and weighs 257 pounds.

The Carolina Panthers and general manager Dan Morgan got the jump they were looking for on Friday night.

Instead of staying put with their second-round pick of the 2025 NFL draft, the Panthers agreed to a pretty extensive trade with the Denver Broncos to move up. The deal sent the 51st overall pick, 85th overall pick, 122nd overall pick and 208th overall pick to Carolina in exchange for the 57th overall pick, 74th overall pick, 111th overall pick and 230th overall pick.

And with that 51st selection, the Panthers drafted Texas A&M pass rusher Nic Scourton.

The 6-foot-3, 257-pounder amassed 17.0 sacks over a three-year college career. Before transferring to play for the Aggies this past season, he notched a Big Ten-leading 10.0 sacks with Purdue in 2023.

Scourton was named a first-team All-SEC member in 2024 and a second-team All-Big Ten member the year prior.

Edgar Salmingo, Jr. ✌?
@PanthersAnalyst

Nic Scourton was a PFF darling and was in consideration for Round 1 territory pre- and during the season

He could be an absolute steal for the #Panthers at 51

Also read somewhere he is only 20 years old.

Save this post and quote it to me for when I’m wrong.  Which I hope I am.

I actually like this pick, a great deal. This kid has a mean streak in him and he stays zoned in… might should be more focused than zoned it at times.

Played for a great defensive coach and got his weight down and then he got his weight down even more pre draft. Nutrition team and conditioning team will work close with him. This guy was a steal and the second best available in my opinion. Starter game one, productive starter.

Princely on the other hand I am just okay with. I don’t ever see him being a three down guy like Nic but a situational pass rusher. I guess it contributes to some need but will have to be developed some in this area. Disappointing because there were starters at TE (even though I like sleeper Jackson Hawes from GT) , CB and safety still on the board, imo. I really like Kevin Winston and I thought we were making the move for him, or I would have traded back and took a flyer on Charles Grant who I honestly never saw play but have read great things and when you give up 2 sacks in three years it has to get one’s attention. But I would have rather chosen a potential starter at that spot.

My last thought before we start today. I hope at some point round five maybe we select Kyle
McCord… in three to four years it will be determined he was the best QB in this yeara draft. Shades of Tom Brady.

AGREED... I like Scourton too. He's really young though. "Maturity" could be an issue. Young kids often make poor decisions. Hopefully he'll get stronger, learn quickly and keep his weight under control.

I am on the record as hoping for a QB somewhere around Rd. 5. I WANT one who has the size and strength to be an active part of a goal-line Offense. I've been advocating for Notre Dame QB, Riley Leonard. He looks big and strong, and has a great arm. Give him a year or two and he IS an NFL QB. (IMHO).

Listening to his presser he sounds like a nice young man who is mature for his age.  He spoke of looking forward to learning from the vets.  He will make rookie mistakes but fortunately the team is in a position where he can be in a rotation instead of having to be the guy right off the bat.
