JIC -- IN CASE YOU WEREN'T AWARE - SITE CHECK - Hobbit99 - 11-19-2025 For those who don't know and for those who care -- If at any time you can't get online with a specific site, there are some "checks" that you can do to help determine if the problem is "local" (your problem) or if the site servers are not responding properly (site's down). It's a simple matter to "ping" the site - if you know the actual IP address. Unfortunately, most of the time the actual address is hidden behind a DNS which is a plain english substitute like "yahoo.com" or "panthers.com". The DNS server (system) translates the common english URL into a machine readable IP address like 186.141.12.12 (Or something similar). There is a more modern protocol (IPV6) which has a more complex system but it works much the same way. Anyway, if you find yourself wondering about a site and whether it's 'down' or not, you can go to one of these sites and enter the known URL (like panthers.com or PanthersFanz.com) and the site will connect through the DNS server and "ping" the IP address. The result will indicate if the problem is you or if the site is "down". Very convenient... Here are two that I use: Both of these seem to be reliable and both give the same results (mostly). onlineornot.com isitdownrightnow.com There may be better check sites than these, but these have always served me well. Over this latest outage, both of these sites agreed that the servers were not responsive. In fact, they ran checks from multiple locations and reported from each location. 007 can "ping" the servers direct, but us guys as 'users' have to rely on a 3rd party site to access the DNS lookup. |
