FUNNY STORY ABOUT LAST YEAR'S DRAFT, THIS YEAR'S DRAFT, THE PANTHERS, and THE SAINTS - PantherFan007 - 04-23-2021 Does the name Tommy Stevens mean anything to you? I didn't think so. But, he is listed as a Quarterback on the Carolina Panthers roster. He played as a backup Quarterback at Mississippi State, but the Saints drafted him as a TE in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. So, what's the funny story? Sean Payton wanted the guy and assumed he would be an undrafted free agent. But, he found out that Joe Brady, who had coached Stevens while Stevens was at Penn State, wanted him on the Panthers. The Panthers had already informed Stevens' agent that if he went undrafted, the Panthers would sign him. So, in order to screw the Panthers, Sean Payton had to borrow a draft pick to get back into the Draft ahead of Carolina, and gave up a sixth round pick in THIS year's draft to do so, but in the end they couldn't keep him on the roster and Carolina ended up with him anyways lol. Not that anything (or much of anything) might ever come of it, but it's funny how "Karma" is. Not only did it cost them a draft pick last year, it cost them one THIS year.... and the guy is STILL on our team lol. Not too shabby to get a player who can play Quarterback OR Tight End, and the Saints paid for all the Draft Picks for him RE: FUNNY STORY ABOUT LAST YEAR'S DRAFT, THIS YEAR'S DRAFT, THE PANTHERS, and THE SAINTS - coffee - 04-26-2021 So, basically, due to Payton being so savvy, they paid a 6th round draft pick in order to give us the player we wanted.
