Best Wishes, Cam!

Cam Newton has been without a NFL home since March. That finally changed Sunday night.

The 2015 MVP quarterback has agreed to terms on a one-year deal to join coach Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported. Rapoport added that the deal, which both sides have quietly worked on recently, is worth up to $7.5 million, according to an informed source.

Newton, 31, will now join a QB room that includes sophomore talent Jarrett Stidham and veteran Brian Hoyer, whom the team brought back for a third time earlier this offseason and compete for the starting spot under center in New England for the 2020 season.

It has been a whirlwind of a year for both Newton and his new team. After having his last two seasons marred by injury, Newton was released by the Panthers, the franchise he shined brightly for since being drafted first overall in 2011, on March 25. Five days prior, the Patriots watched as future Hall of Famer Tom Brady signed a contract with Tampa Bay. This agreement couldn't have come at a more perfect time for both parties and, should things go according to plan, it could lead to something special.

Despite having his 2019 campaign limited to two games due to a Lisfranc fracture, Newton was expected to be a big free-agent target this offseason. Of course, health concerns stemming from shoulder and foot surgeries over the past two years greatly impacted his market value. Couple that with his inability to get a physical due to the offseason restrictions and you end up with less than ideal circumstances that resulted in him being signed a month before training camps are set to begin.

His resume more than speaks for itself but here's a quick reminder of what a healthy Newton has done in his career: three-time Pro Bowler, 2011 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and numerous Panthers and NFL records in his name. He also led Carolina to its second Super Bowl berth in 2015, a year that saw them finish 15-1 and him win an MVP while earning Offensive Player of the Year and first-team All-Pro honors. His career win-loss record is 68-55-1 while his postseason record is 3-4.

We all know that Belichick is a coaching genius but he has never had a player quite like Newton at his disposal. Now that his homebase is in Foxborough, where he has a solid chance to start, Newton's revenge season just got way more intriguing.

I do wish him well. Will we see Grandmama? Will we see poor mechanics? Will we see his glass jaw?

I really do wish him much success.

I hope Cam does well. I like the guy, I really, really do. What I don't like is all the "extra". It feels (in my honest opinion) forced and fake. Do what you do best, Cam. Play football, and do it with everything you've got.

Wow. Reading that article is the first time something occurred to me. It says:

"His resume more than speaks for itself but here's a quick reminder of what a healthy Newton has done in his career: three-time Pro Bowler, 2011 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and numerous Panthers and NFL records in his name. 2015 was spectacular, but that means his record for everything else is 53-54-1 and postseason 1-3. Not very impressive. If I had felt there was any chance of getting the 2015 Cam back for a few years, I'd have been for it, but I think, at best, we'd have been a 50-50 team as we watched his 30+ year old body slow with more beatings, and then we'd be right back here. But this is probably best for him. If he can handle their system (not allowing the antics, etc. and demanding perfection) this may be the perfect way for him to go forward. I don't think he'll stick in New England, but it will hopefully springboard him to one more decent contract somewhere.

People are digging up historical stats trying to support Cam. He hears bells ringing when pressured. He's been in this condition since his last Superbowl appearance. Bell ringing leads to reverting back to bad mechanics. Then comes Grandmama to make it all better.

I seriously hope he does very well. I do love Grandmama Billy.

One more thing... Does Cam take a knee during the national anthem in Foxboro?
