Okay Josh. Take Mr Poe, as part of his original deal, which was 3 years and included a 10 million signing bonus. That signing bonus is always divided by the number of years ( up to 5 )...so since he has played 2 or those three years, the panthers will have a 3,333,333.33 "dead money" against their cap IF he is not on the team...95% of all dead cap is tied to signing bonus which is spread out over the term of the original deal....there can be other small things like roster bonuses and such but it is normally signing bonuses. Hope this make sense. Total money a team has to account for, for a player no longer on the team ( normally the signing bonus, remaining guarantees, earned bonuses still to be paid ).
