His thumb.  He hurt his DAMNED THUMB and they benched him ..... for Bryce Young.  Andy Dalton could play better football with his whole arm in a cast than Bryce Young.  Now, if Andy had injured his thinker, that would be another issue.

Try to grip anything with a spread grip without full use of your thumb. -- IMPOSSIBLE. 
Opposable thumbs. It's one of the things that separates primates from .... well... every other .... thing, being, whatever....
