It looks like the move that many Panthers fans have been clamoring for might finally happen. The team is expected to bench Kyle Allen and start rookie Will Grier at quarterback in Week 16, sources tell Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Allen showed well during a Week 17 spot start last year, and did enough in camp to beat out Grier to be Cam Newton‘s backup at the start of the season. Newton was soon sidelined by his foot injury and eventually placed on injured reserve, so Allen has been starting since Week 3. He had some initial success, and the Panthers won each of his first four starts. There was even some talk of Allen potentially starting over a healthy Newton and being Carolina’s quarterback of the future, but after a hot start he faded pretty fast.

He’s been falling apart in recent weeks, throwing ten interceptions over his past five games. Carolina raised some eyebrows by drafting Grier in the third-round back in April, but he’s yet to take a regular season snap. A West Virginia product, there were some analysts during his last year in college who thought he was a first or second round prospect. He slipped a bit as the pre-draft process went on, and ended up going 100th overall.

He’ll now be seeing his first regular season action on the road against the Colts. The Panthers have one of the most interesting offseasons ahead of them of any team, with reports suggesting they might look to move on from Newton this spring. With so much uncertainty at the position, it makes sense why they’d want to take a look at Grier over the final two games.

With this move, Allen’s days as a starter are likely over for the foreseeable future. It was a nice story for a while, and his rapid rise and fall are a good reminder that nothing lasts long in the National Football League. A second-year UDFA from Houston, Allen can be brought back cheaply next year so it’s possible he’ll once again be Carolina’s backup in 2020.

And.... now per NFL.com

Panthers expected to start QB Will Grier vs. Colts

The Carolina Panthers are going to give rookie quarterback Will Grier his shot.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday that the Panthers are expected to start the third-round pick in Week 16 versus the Indianapolis Colts, per sources informed of the decision.

Interim coach Perry Fewell said Monday he would make the decision on Wednesday, opening the door for a QB change with Kyle Allen struggling.

Allen started hot, winning the first four games after taking over for an injured Cam Newton in Week 3. Since Week 8, however, the quarterback has cratered, throwing 15 interceptions in the last eight games. Sunday's three-INT loss to the Seattle Seahawks marked the third game this season Allen has thrown three or more picks in a bout, tied for second-most in the NFL, behind only Jameis Winston.

The Panthers offense has gone in the tank with Allen at the helm. The 23-year-old signal-caller has struggled with sacks behind a porous offensive line and had problems in the red zone, where he has a bundle of turnovers.

With two tilts left, Carolina will test drive Grier. The West Virginia product struggled in the preseason, completing 55.7 percent of his passes, 2 TDs, 3 INT and took seven sacks.

The Panthers will use the end of a lost season to evaluate Grier and the rest of the roster before the offseason overhauls begin.

The Panthers plan to make a quarterback change on Sunday, starting rookie Will Grier in the team’s Week 16 game at Indianapolis instead of Kyle Allen, according to a source.
Grier, who grew up in Davidson, will be making his first NFL start and taking his first regular-season snaps.

The third-round pick, 100th overall, out of West Virginia did not put up an impressive preseason performance, completing 55.7 percent of his passes and throwing two touchdowns and three interceptions over the four games he played in.

Seems overdue. A guy who's a fa after this year(Kyle) vs a three year guy left(duh). I know with rookie exp (starting day 1) Kyle looked not bad. He's also close to the most sacked qb in the NFL. That'll spike ints n fumbles. Still gotta see what Greir can do. Hope for the best, expect the Panthers.

Big deal in my opinion with Kyle Allen is that he holds the ball too long and gets in trouble. Remember that Allen has QB skills. Panthers tanked as a whole giving Allen no one to throw to and no time to breathe. Let's not throw the baby out with the bath water.
