HC Interviews -- Latest Information...

As of today, Thursday, the Panthers have announced the completion of two more HC virtual interviews.  Brian Callahan, Cincinnati Bengals OC has completed a virtual interview as reported by Panthers.com. Also, later in the day, the Panthers completed a virtual interview with Bobby Slowik, Houston Texans OC.

These two bring the total interviews to nine (so far...).  AND, as BCF pointed out, Dave Canales is supposed to be up next.  I'm still wondering if the Panthers are going to interview any of the former HCs...???  Nothing reported at this point, yet I'm not convinced that it isn't going to happen.

¿Quien sabe?   Huh

I think Ben Johnson is tomorrow (Fri)

Just a guess but I think Tepper is not interested in interviewing 1) College coaches 2) Retreads.  Looks like he has 1 more shot at this thing.  If he screws this up...what the hell is next???

They’ve interviewed several former HC’s, they’ve only been defensive coordinators though.  I don’t think we go with a defensive minded coach, however.

You're correct ... I should have been more clear ......

I meant any of the HCs from THIS cycle.  You know, like Bill Belichick; Pete Carroll; Mike Vrabell; Staley; McDaniels; Smith...... Those guys...
Smile

Closing out the day....

So, as mentioned earlier, the Panthers announced late this evening, that they had completed a virtual interview with Dave Canales, the OC for the T.B. Bucs. That announcement came through around 10:00 P.M. --- so I imagine that will be the last of them for today.

As the sun sets on Thursday (several hours ago...), the Panthers completed three virtual interviews today. More to come..???  Yes, probably.  Also, according to the current rules schedule, live, in-person interviews start on Monday the 22nd.

Last Interview this week..... ???

The Panthers have announced they have completed a virtual interview with Ben Johnson, Detroit Lions OC.  The announcement came through about 7:30 on Friday evening. Unless the Panthers schedule some interviews over the weekend, this will be the final one for this week.  Live, in-person interviews can begin on Monday...

Johnson interviewed with Washington Friday as well.  Today (Sat) he has 3 more interviews:  Johnson will conduct virtual interviews with the Los Angeles Chargers, Seattle Seahawks and Atlanta Falcons on Saturday.

One thing for sure, the man is going to be making a lot of money.

Right you are, LP.  Another thing for sure.... Atlanta is definitely going "all-in" on their HC search.  Belichick; Harbaugh; Johnson .... and who knows who else might be waiting in the wings to be interviewed.

OH... I forgot.

Mike Vrabel in Atlanta next Wednesday...

I think the selection of the GM wil go a long ways in determining who will even consider this head coaching job. That and of course the green backs.

A quick update on the Head Coaching Search:

Second (In-Person) Interviews This Week
Tampa OC Dave Canales
Panthers DC Ejiro Evero
Rams DC Raheem Morris

Conducted Virtual Interviews Last Week, Team Still in Playoffs so can't interview in-person:
Ben Johnson

Todd Monken

Conducted Virtual Interviews This Month:
Dan Quinn
Frank Smith
Bobby Slowik
Chris Tabor

Not Happening:
Bengals OC Brian Callahan - Hired as Titans HC
Eagles OC Brian Johnson - Never Interviewed

From that list I would guess the top 4 are Johnson, Canales, Slowik, Evero.

Of those, Canales and Slowik have been coordinators for 1 year.  Is a jump to HC too soon?

Canales experience: (Age 42)

Quarterbacks coach
Seattle Seahawks (2020–2021)

San Francisco 49ers (2017–2018)
Defensive quality control coach
San Francisco 49ers (2019–2020)
Offensive assistant
San Francisco 49ers (2021)
Offensive pass game specialist
San Francisco 49ers (2022)
Offensive passing game coordinator
Houston Texans (2023–present)
Offensive coordinator

Johnson: (Age 37)
Boston College (2009–2010)

Graduate assistant
Boston College (2011)
Tight ends coach
Miami Dolphins (2012)
Offensive assistant
Miami Dolphins (2013–2015)
Assistant quarterbacks coach
Miami Dolphins (2015)
Tight ends coach
Miami Dolphins (2016–2017)
Assistant wide receivers coach
Miami Dolphins (2018)
Wide receivers coach
Detroit Lions (2019)
Offensive quality control coach
Detroit Lions (2020–2021)
Tight ends coach
Detroit Lions (2021)
Passing game coordinator
Detroit Lions (2022–present)
Offensive coordinator

Evero: (age 43)
UC Davis (2005–2006)

Assistant coach
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2007–2009)
Defensive quality control coach
University of Redlands (2010)
Special teams coordinator & safeties coach
San Francisco 49ers (2011)
Quality control coach
San Francisco 49ers (2012–2013)
Offensive assistant
San Francisco 49ers (2014–2015)
Defensive assistant
Green Bay Packers (2016)
Defensive quality control coach
Los Angeles Rams (2017–2020)
Safeties coach
Los Angeles Rams (2021)
Secondary coach & passing game coordinator
Denver Broncos (2022)
Defensive coordinator
Carolina Panthers (2023–present)
Defensive coordinator

Of course there are other factors besides a resume.  Washington, Seattle, LAC, and Atlanta are all considered more desirable locations thanks to Dave and Nicole. I hope the Harbaugh domino falls soon. It seems Washington is a fav to get Johnson.  Have not heard Canales getting an interview in Seattle which is interesting...who are they targeting?  Slowik is getting a lot of interviews so the Panthers may have some competition there. I am thinking we may be down to Canales and Evero. Dan knows them both very well.

Just hope the Teppers listen to the football people this time.
