Panthers sign CB Jaycee Horn to four-year, $100 million contract extension

The Carolina Panthers have locked up cornerback Jaycee Horn with a new deal that will make him the highest-paid defensive back in the NFL.

Horn has signed a four-year, $100 million contract extension with the Panthers, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Monday. The deal includes $70 million guaranteed, per Rapoport.

The club has since announced Horn's four-year extension.

A former top-10 pick, Horn entered 2024 wanting to prove himself as one of the league's best corners. Although he only intercepted one pass, Horn also had 13 pass break-ups and 2.0 sacks in 15 starts to earn his first Pro Bowl bid.

The new deal will pay Horn an average of $25 million per season, which tops the two previous highest contracts at corner -- Miami's Jalen Ramsey ($24.1 million APY) and Denver's Patrick Surtain II ($24M APY).

Horn, 25, is also now the highest-paid Panther, topping defensive tackle Derrick Brown, whose deal averages $24 million per season. In 37 career starts, Horn has totaled five interceptions, 26 passes defensed, two sacks and eight tackles for loss.

I'm happy he re-signed.  BUT... I am NOT happy with the terms. TOO MUCH MONEY..!!

Seriously..???  The highest paid DB in NFL history.?!?!     SERIOUSLY.??

He's been with the Panthers for four years. Played in just over half of the games in four years. Three season-ending injuries. One Pro-Bowl. And THAT makes him the highest paid DB in history.??

There is something seriously wrong here.!! He's GOOD. No doubt. But, he's not THAT good.!!

Contract should have been three years, maybe $60M.  --  Actually, I would have preferred to play him on the 5th year option, then depending on how he played and his availability, Tag him once (maybe twice..!!). If he stayed healthy, then pay him according to his effort and stats.

Here is the official word from the Panthers...

PANTHERS.COM  Panthers Extend Jaycee Horn

Quote:CHARLOTTEThe Panthers are clear about putting an emphasis on improving their defense this offseason, and their first big step was hanging onto one of their own.

The team agreed to terms with cornerback Jaycee Horn on a four-year extension on Monday, which will keep him here through the 2029 season.

Horn still had another year of contract left after they picked up the fifth-year option on his rookie deal last spring. But keeping him here for the long-term was a priority, and they've now paired the 2021 first-rounder with defensive tackle and 2020 first-rounder Derrick Brown.

General manager Dan Morgan said as soon as last season ended that extending Horn was a priority, and at the combine, said he hoped the deal came "sooner than later."

"I think I said that to you guys the last time I talked to you guys, that Jaycee is obviously the focal point of the defense, somebody that we're going to want here long-term, and, and we're going to work on getting him a long-term deal," Morgan said in January.

Horn was named to his first Pro Bowl this season after playing more than 1,000 snaps (or 1,036, to be specific, 98 percent of the team's total defensive snaps) in 15 games. He wasn't among the top choices in the fan voting, which meant this recognition came from his peers in the league and coaches, people who have always known what kind of player he was.

"A lot more work to be put in," Horn said upon earning that recognition. "I could be a way better player. I got a lot of room left to go, so just trying to do that every day and then hopefully next year coming back and, you know, making it again.

"I'm really just learning football, you know, being out there's different. We learn in the classroom, but we actually get the snaps and get the reps, the game slows down a lot, so I feel like the game slowed down a lot for me from Week 1 to the last game I played, so I'm just excited to get back next year and try to stack them up."

And now, he'll be stacking them up here for years to come.

Fblaugh Fblaugh Fblaugh

Hey, I'm a Gamecocks fan and was stoked when we drafted him, but IMHO he is NOT a $100 Million Man.  Just saying.   That is yet to be seen.
