Word on the street - Jadeveon Clowney has been released.

There have been several Panthers released TODAY.  Within the last 30 min, there has been some news. In addition to Clowney, Panthers RB Brooks apparently DONE for this year.

More coming ----

According to Panthers.Com, there were a series of roster moves made today in advance of Rookie Mini-Camp. With 8 draftees and a bunch of UDFAs coming in who need to be "signed", there was a need for roster space.

Officially ---

Clowney has been released.
Jonathon Brooks has been placed on the PUP list - This makes it official that he cannot return this year.
Colin Granger, basketball Center/Tight End has been waived injured - with an injury settlement.
Jordan Matthews, TE, was released.
Andrew Rahm, OL, was waived.

There were some other lesser-known players who are no longer with the Panthers as well.

Jadeveon Clowney will be looking for work elsewhere in 2025. The Carolina Panthers released Clowney on Thursday, a league source confirmed. ESPN was the first to report the move. The move will open up $7.78 million in salary cap space, according to Over The Cap. However, because the Panthers couldn’t trade Clowney, they’ll still need to pay $2 million in guaranteed salary to the Rock Hill, S.C., native.

Clowney signed a two-year, $20 million deal with the Panthers last offseason. He was expected to be the team’s primary edge rusher after producing 9.5 sacks in Baltimore during the 2023 season. However, Clowney’s pass-rushing prowess proved to be inconsistent. While he co-led the team — with defensive end A’Shawn Robinson — with 5.5 sacks, Clowney’s output fell short of expectations, like most of the defense.

Clowney, 32, appeared in just 14 games last season. He’s likely to be used as a rotational pass rusher for the remainder of his run in the NFL.

Jadeveon Clowney has bounced around to several different teams during the latter part of his career, but the veteran edge rusher had never been released … until Thursday.

Two weeks after taking a pair of SEC pass rushers during the second night of the NFL Draft, the Carolina Panthers cut Clowney in the biggest of several roster moves before Friday’s start of rookie camp.

The release ends Clowney’s stint with his hometown-ish team a year earlier than he anticipated. The native of Rock Hill, S.C., who was the No. 1 pick out of South Carolina in 2014, signed a two-year, $20 million contract with the Panthers last March. Clowney, who tied defensive lineman A’Shawn Robinson for the team lead with 5 1/2 sacks in 2024, said this isn’t the end of his playing days.

“I’m definitely gonna play well. You can mark my word on that. I don’t care where I end up playing at, I’m gonna play extremely well,” Clowney said Thursday afternoon during a phone interview with The Athletic.

“I think I played well for Carolina (last) year, considering the circumstances that was unfolded for me. I played with a bunch of guys that was hurt this past year. And I ended up playing extremely well for them. So it is what it is. I can play the game. I can play football. There are 31 other teams. I just hope another team gives me that opportunity so I can prove myself again. I feel like I can do that.”

Morgan reached out to several teams before the draft to gauge trade interest in Clowney, then unsuccessfully shopped him again following the draft, according to a league source. Releasing Clowney creates $7.8 million in salary-cap space for the Panthers, with $6 million in dead money, according to Over the Cap. That gives the Panthers a little more financial flexibility if they want to pursue a veteran safety or address depth at another position.

This play in college made a lot of money for Clowney.  I think teams kept looking for that player.

Yep, I remember that game well.  That one play elevated his draft stock completely, even though he had been rumored to be a top-five pick.

Yep...we can sign all our draft picks with the savings.  He left the building throwing shade at the team.

Thanks for your service. Best of luck.

Not meaning to pile on but this was when the Browns cut him...or just did not resign:

Naturally, he didn't hesitate to put the blame elsewhere. This is who he is. Clowney has never shown an ounce of accountability during his career. It should come as no surprise that he would blame the Browns the same way he did the Titans. And wherever Clowney ends up next will go through the same cycle.
