Derek Carr has officially been released by the Raiders.

Derek Carr released by Raiders after nine seasons (nfl.com)

The Panthers are one of four teams predicted to be a landing spot for him.

Derek Carr landing spots in 2023: Four potential NFL team fits for three-time Pro Bowl QB

The Panthers made runs at some of the top available quarterbacks last offseason before settling on drafting Matt Corral in Round 3 and trading for Baker Mayfield in July. Neither worked out in the short term, as Corral suffered a season-ending injury, and Mayfield struggled before being cut and ending up with the Rams.

Now they might be set to hit restart at the position again this offseason. New head coach Frank Reich certainly will have a say in which direction the team heads there, as could new QB coach Josh McCown, but neither of them, nor the other offensive coaches Reich has added to his staff, have strong connections to Carr.

The Panthers also own the No. 9 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and could use that to select a new passer. They also could re-sign Sam Darnold, as an inexpensive free-agent option who played better for Carolina down the stretch, as well as move forward with Corral. Then again, the Panthers’ interest in Carr could also be tied to the fact that the division-rival Saints are clearly kicking his tires. The NFC South’s quarterback situation appears a bit lean now that Tom Brady's retired, leaving all four teams seemingly looking for help at the position.

This is a young team with some foundational talent around which to build, and the Panthers could end up with six 2023 draft picks in the top 150 overall, thanks to the Christian McCaffrey trade. So while drafting a young quarterback can’t be dismissed at all, going the veteran route also has to be on the table.

I wouldn’t have any issue in having Carr. None. It would be a tremendous upgrade.

No issue with Derek Carr.  He is a proven talent.  Would be an excellent addition short term  (2-3 years...maybe as long as 4-5). Would definitely be an effective "bridge" to a promising rookie  (IF we had one..).

There is one potential issue... Carr's contract.  He has already been released by the Raiders, so he can be signed. His contract was for approx. 35 Mil. this year. The Raiders are on the hook for PART of that of course, but his release came before the contract became fully guaranteed. That means a CAP savings of some degree for the Raiders. But it will also mean a fairly large contract will be required to sign him.....probably.

If the announcement about his release is correct, that would mean he is already "in play" in the NFL market. Chances are, he has several offers on the table even before Free Agency starts.

Incidentally.... FA starts today at 4:00 PM.  We will likely know his future team later today..... unless he decides to sit on FA waiting for offers.

Agreed Hobbit, I'd bet he has already been juggling offers from several teams.

And mark my words, raiders will regret this decision, he wasn’t their issue.

If the price was right, I could see him having a drew Brees effect if he came here.

Yes... As I mentioned up there ^^^ .... I have no problem with Derek Carr.  I have always believed that Carr was "undervalued" in the league.  Most of his "issues", if you want to call them that, were secondary or tertiary to other "team" issues.

IF he could cause the sort of "ripple effect" you describe, it would be worth almost any reasonable cost.  I don't think we can go into the season without a solid veteran presence at QB. Just don't know if it will be Carr.....
